Things to Consider Before Buying the Best Laptop for Writers

Operating system

You’ll have to choose between Windows, Mac, and Google Operating Systems. And each comes with its pros and cons. Let us analyze them from a writer’s perspective.

  • Windows OS

Windows is generally the most preferred among the three by writers. And that’s because it is the most diverse and compatible of the three. It has an excellent software and hardware base, and its new notebooks and netbooks are comparatively inexpensive and come with sleek and slim bodies that are ideal for portability and lightweight use. But if you want more power in a slim and elegant body, then you have Ultrabooks, but these machines are expensive.

  • MacOS

The macOS or the latest ‘Mojave’ is the operating system used by Apple products, simply known as Macs. Despite being the most expensive option of the three. Macs are the most reliable and refined option. Its software base has recently grown significantly, and because of its close ecosystem, it offers better security than Windows OS. Their Macbooks are sleek and lightweight and are preferred for their reliability and durability by professional writers.

  • GoogleOS

GoogleOS is the most secure option of the three regarding online security. Moreover, your data is completely secured and backed by its cloud technology in case of loss or failure. Their Chromebooks are inexpensive and perfect for writers who need to surf and research online, e.g., researchers and content writers. They are compact and the best lightweight laptops to be carried around, but for their full functionality, they need to be connected to the internet, which can be a pain in the ass sometimes when on the go.

Design

Modern laptops now come in different designs. And design not only adds to the charm of the device but also adds to the ease of use and portability. So, you’ll have to choose between two designs.

  • Clamshell: These are traditional laptops with a 180-degree hinge on the screen.
  • Hybrid/Convertibles: Usually called two-in-one laptops, these laptops come with a 360-degree hinge and can be folded to be used as a tablet. They come with a touchscreen.

Keyboard

Indeed, it is essential for writers that their laptops have a comfortable keyboard. Bounce and loudness a vital features to consider before buying. The smoother and more silent the keyboard, the better it is. And if you are keen on not disturbing your partner when you write at night, we recommend you go for a laptop with a backlit keyboard. Moreover, if you write for long hours, ensure you get a well-built keyboard that can handle your everyday writing.

Battery Life

You wouldn’t want to run for a power outlet while writing and in a flow. Moreover, sometimes outlets aren’t easy to find on the go. So, it is essential for your laptop to have a long battery life because you may get inspiration anywhere. We would recommend a battery that lasts for 8 hours at least, and it is convenient to look for good laptops whose spare battery is readily available because, eventually, you have to replace the battery someday.

Portability

Whether you write on the go or like writing while lying on your cozy bed, you will eventually have to carry your laptop in your hand, backpack, or laptop bag someday. This means the weight of your laptop is essential. And we believe that a laptop that weighs less than 4 lbs can only be considered portable.
But one more thing that adds to portability is the size of the laptop. Laptops come in many sizes, and the larger the screen size, the less portable the laptop generally is.

Screen

  • Screen size: The screen size must be neither too small, which gives you headaches while reading, nor too big that it compromises the portability of the laptop. We recommend 11 to 14-inch laptops to be the ideal ones for writers.
  • Resolution: For writing laptops, you may not need a high-quality display as you would need with multimedia and gaming laptops, but you certainly need a laptop that is bright enough to work outdoors and doesn’t cause strain on your eyes while writing for long hours indoors. Any display between 1366×768 pixels to 1920×1080 pixels works for writers based on their preferences. But the higher the display, the faster it drains the battery.
  • Matte Screen: If you use your laptop more outside, then matte screens are the best option. These screens use a light scattering antireflection layer that reduces light reflection in brighter conditions, allowing it to see the screen even in the bright sun.
  • Touch screen: This optional feature comes with a price, but if you prefer handwritten notes over typing, this feature can make it easy for you. A touchscreen with a stylus is ideal for those who prefer handwritten notes or like to draw and sketch at the same time.

Hard Drive

For a writer, 250 GB of storage space is more than enough. And you can always upgrade it if you wish to. But it is recommended to buy an SSD instead of an HDD.

RAM

Even 4 GB RAM is enough for writers. But to stay on the safer side, we recommend you get at least 8 GB RAM. A good RAM makes it easier for researchers who keep multiple browsers open while working.

CPU

Even an Intel 5i or equivalent processor would work for writers, but if money isn’t a problem, then the better CPU you get, the better it is for you.

GPU

The GPU doesn’t matter much unless you write about gaming and graphics or play games in your spare time. You can get any discrete graphic processor only if you need it. But always remember higher GPUs will drain your battery faster.
